Hoarding Disorder Support

compassionate hoarding disorder support

Hoarding Disorder is one of the most misunderstood mental health challenges—often reduced to sensational images of clutter or trash. But behind every overwhelmed home is a person who matters. At Fight the Blight, we offer real support for individuals and families impacted by hoarding disorder, combining hands-on help with heart-led understanding. We understand how hard it can be to ask for help—especially when the clutter feels overwhelming or shame has taken root. But you’re not alone. Taking this first step means you’re already moving forward. Our hoarding disorder support services are designed to help people move forward with dignity.

💬 Family & Caregiver Support

Hoarding affects everyone in the home. We offer guidance and support for loved ones seeking to help without harming.

Our Approach

We don’t believe in forced cleanouts or shaming interventions. Instead, we approach hoarding disorder through compassion, trauma-informed care, and peer connection. Recovery doesn’t mean “throw everything out”—it means regaining control, reclaiming space, and restoring dignity. We take the time to understand each person’s story so we can offer the kind of support that leads to lasting change—not just a temporary fix.

Understanding the Root Causes of Hoarding Disorder

Hoarding disorder is rarely about the stuff. More often, it’s about what the stuff represents—grief, trauma, anxiety, fear of loss, or a need for control. Many of the individuals we serve have experienced major life disruptions: death of a loved one, abuse, eviction, or medical emergencies. The accumulation of objects can feel like protection in a world that feels unsafe.

At Fight the Blight, we believe healing begins when people are seen and heard, not shamed or blamed. That’s why every part of our program is designed to restore dignity and provide practical support—not just a temporary cleanup.

Why Peer Support Works

One of the most powerful tools we offer is peer-led support. These aren’t clinical groups. They’re welcoming circles where participants can relate, share progress, and encourage one another without judgment. Led by people with lived experience, our groups are grounded in empathy and guided by the Buried in Treasures framework—a proven model for sustainable change.

These sessions help members:

  • Understand the thinking patterns behind clutter

  • Learn strategies to manage anxiety and decision-making

  • Celebrate small victories and maintain momentum

Many participants stay connected long after the group ends, forming lasting accountability and support networks.
